The Counter Package - Coach Buddy Taylor

As teams begin to employ defensive schemes in order to shut down the inside veer and midline plays, it is a necessity that we come up with several methods to run counters off these plays.

One of the first counters we incorporated was the inside veer counter dive and the inside veer counter option. In order to run these and counter the defense we are going to block it just like the veer to the fake site and base block the counter side. We prefer to run the counter to the 3 technique side but can also be very effective to the 1 technique side.

The counter option is basically blocked the same way as the counter with the exception that we do not block the playside DE. The QB is going to pitch or keep off of his reaction. We can also block the EMOL and pitch off the OLB or SS.

We also like to run a counter trap or counter sweep off the veer fake. I will discuss this off the midline fake later. When we first started running this play, we were utilizing the wishbone formation. We would give the ball to teh TE on an end-around play. When we went flexbone, we started using the slot as the ball carrier. We will pull the backside guard, who will trap the EMOL on the trap play and lead around the end on the sweep play. Both these plays have been very effective for us to counter the fast flow of the linebackers with motion and the play fake to the motion side. As a variation the motion back can, on the snap of the ball, lead the play. He goes through the bole on the trap and leads around the end on the sweep. We run it both ways where he continues his pitch path or leads.
